Harry Potter

halloween2005 Peter was the Boy Wizard this Halloween. I have only praise for J.K. Rowling for creating a such a wonderful series of books. She has not only encouraged a whole generation of kids to excitedly read complex plot-driven novels, but she has made the the whole British “boarding-school” look cool for Halloween.

There was little question what costume Peter was going to wear this year.

Visiting the Nina

nina A replica of Christopher Columbus’s ship the Nina recently docked on the St. Croix in Hudson, Wisconsin. The ship was on a trip up the Mississippi during it’s recent tour of North American ports.

The last day in July was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for some sightseeing. Peter was a little “ho-hum” about seeing a sailing ship until he got sight of it. His excitement grew when he realized it looked like a Pirate ship.

The ship, a Caravel, is a replica of the one used by Columbus to cross the ocean on his famous voyage to the New World. The replica was built in Brazil using ship-building techniques common in the 15th century. It has been described as the most authentic replica Columbus era ship ever built.

The first thing that struck us when visiting the ship was how small it is. It’s hard to imagine three ships as small as this crossing the Atlantic 500 years ago. During that voyage the ships’ holds were packed with cargo, foodstuffs and livestock. The only place for the crew to sleep was on the open deck. The captain’s quarters were a tiny space below deck, not much larger than a crate. This was the only private space on board the ship.

We took a few pictures while we visited this Nina. The picture at left is a press photo of the replica at sail. During our visit the sails were up. I understand the Coast Guard required the Nina to travel in this area using a motor.

Santa, Elves visit two very happy little boys

santa2004 Once again this year, Santa and his elves happened to stop by Peter’s grandparents house right while Peter and his cousin were decorating the Christmas tree. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!

The elves were a little bit rough around the edges, but you would be too, if you had spent the last eleven months making toys for kids. The days before Christmas are a really busy time for Santa and his elves, as you could tell from the fact that several of the elves needed a shave.

Santa and Elves Shifty, Dicey, Studly, and Flasher along with “reindog” Rudolph made a visit to Peter’s grandparent’s house last year. These are very lucky grandchildren to have received personal Santa visits two years in a row. This year the boys had wrapped a present for Santa and carrots for Rudolph just in case they stopped by.

See our Santa 2004 photo album to view more pictures from the big event, or see last year’s Christmas 2003 photo album for last years Santa encounter.

Minnesota State Fair

Fair2004 Between visits with grandparents and parents, Peter visited the Minnesota State Fair three times this year. We figure he was there for at least 29 hours over the three visits.

The animals and barns were a big hit, so were the huge pretzels and the kiddie rides. Peter rode his first roller coaster. He declared the ride “bumpy”. Photos of our trips to the State Fair are available in our photo gallery.

This picture is of myself and Peter admiring the “Mars Rover Rover” snoopy doghouse stature at the Fair. It was created by Dave Brynestad & Go East and sponsored by Met Life Auto & Home. This was one of many snoopy doghouse statues on display at the fair.

The Snoopy doghouse statues were part of Saint Paul’s Doghouse Days of Summer celebration. There were 104 Snoopy doghouse statues scattered around Saint Paul this summer, each designed and created by different local artists.

Summer picnic at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

Arboretum_Picnic We spent a wonderful summer afternoon having a picnic at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in August. This was one of those “found” days where we had an unexpected free Saturday. We spread out on top of a hill overlooking an apple orchard. This was a great way to enjoy a beautiful summer afternoon. I’ve added a few pictures of the afternoon to the website.

The Landscape Arboretum was running their Totally Terrific Treehouses exhibit. They had set up 12 one-of-a-kind treehouses around the grounds of the Arboretum. Each was designed by different artists and architects. Kids were able to climb around in and on the treehouses.

Elaine’s birthday party

Elaine2004 We celebrated Elaine’s birthday at Kafe 421 early in July. Elaine celebrated with her mother, husband, her sons and their wives, and her three grandchildren.

Kafe 421 is a wonderful bistro in Dinkytown that serves a fusion of Greek and Russian food. I’ve added photos of the Elaine’s birthday to the website.

A Comstock 4th of July

2004July4 We celebrated Independence Day this year at Sam’s uncle and aunt’s house. Manny and Becky live in Saint Anthony Park in Saint Paul. This is the home where Sam’s grandparent’s raised their family. Saint Anthony Park has been hosting a small town style 4th of July celebration for many years.

We had a wonderful afternoon with Sam’s family. We cheered her relatives on as they competed in the volleyball competitions at the park and we enjoyed zydeco music from the bandshell in the evening.

I’ve included some photos of the afternoon on the website.

Riding Light Rail to Fort Snelling

lightrail The last week in June, Samantha, Peter and I rode the new Hiawatha Light Rail line from downtown Minneapolis out to Fort Snelling.

We’ve been excitedly waiting for the light rail line to open up for quite a while. At the moment, with only one “line”, you really can’t call this a light rail “system”, but it’s still a great addition to our public transportation infrastructure here in the Twin Cities.

After arriving at the Fort Snelling station, we walked over to the historic old fort. I think the highlight of the trip for Peter was getting Gettysburg civil war army men from the gift shop.

I’ve added pictures of the trip to our photo gallery.

Springtime in Minnesota

Spring2004 Here’s a little taste of springtime in Minnesota. These are pictures from last spring as we enjoyed the season.

I’ve included pictures our Easter celebration, a visit to the spring flower show at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory at Como Park, the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary, and a trip to the Minneapolis waterfront.

With fall approaching, I began to think about how recent it was that the snow melted and everything had that bright green spring color. I realized I hadn’t added any pictures to our gallery in a long time. Well, better late than never…
